Azure VPN Client: import XML profile

Overview

This is a small operator note for importing an Azure VPN Client XML profile on Windows.

It is not something the network team usually needs to handle directly, but it is useful to know when troubleshooting or helping an end user.

Key point

Using azurevpn -i VPNProfile.xml by itself is not enough in this case.

The XML profile must first be copied into the Azure VPN Client LocalState folder:

$env:USERPROFILE\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AzureVpn_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

After that, run the import from that folder.

PowerShell example

$Source = "C:\Temp\VPNProfile.xml"
$LocalState = "$env:USERPROFILE\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AzureVpn_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState"

Copy-Item $Source $LocalState -Force

Set-Location $LocalState

azurevpn -i VPNProfile.xml -f

Notes

  • -i imports the profile.
  • -f forces the import.
  • The example assumes the profile file is named VPNProfile.xml.
  • If the Azure VPN Client is not installed from the Microsoft Store, confirm the package path before using the command.
